In the year 1928, Piccadilly Theatre marked its opening and was one of the largest theatres in London. During the opening production, one of the acclaimed actresses of that time, Miss Evelyn Laye performed.
During the earlier time, Piccadilly used to function as cinema and created history in the entertainment industry with the release of first talking picture in Britain, The Singing Fool with Al Jolson.
Most of the stage entertainments were performed at Piccadilly Theatre. The theatre has performed some great shows such as Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf and a Night with Dame Edna. Theatre has also hosted a huge range of Royal Shakespeare Company productions which includes Edward II. During the era of 90s theatre witnessed huge expansion in terms of musicals, ballet and dance. Piccadilly Theatre hosted some of the popular plays under the superb direction of Sir Peter Hall which stars some big names Judi Dench, Michael Pennington, Julia Mackenzie and Eric Sykes. Another record breaking London show, Spend Spend Spend which starred popular Olivier Award winning actress Barbara Dickson was a huge crowd puller.
